This weekend Siyanda Mbele is one of the Emerging Creatives exhibiting his work at the DESIGN INDABA festival.
Siyanda is from Umlazi, KwaZulu Natal and graduated from the Durban University of Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design. Mbele is the owner of Pinda, which designs and manufactures hand-painted furniture inspired by the uniqueness of South African cultures. His designs provide an unexpectedly modern variation of African furniture and incorporate South African cultural references.
Mbele uses Ndebele, Venda and Zulu patterns in the products, which are interpreted into a novel aesthetic that also influences the shape of the products’ legs.
Siyanda Mbele is part of the 2015 Department of Arts and Culture and SABS DESIGN INSTITUTE Programme in association with Design Indaba. Here at the DI, we helped Siyanda redesign and rethink the manufacturing of his famous table legs, making it a more effective process. We also guided the Brand conceptualisation of PINDA and partnered him with a graphic to finish off the branding.
He has won several accolades:
2007 - Eskom Expo for Young Scientists Electrical and Mechanical Engineering category, bronze medal
2012 - Durban University of Technology Interior Design, second place, office design / commendable development in design
2013 - Design Indaba
