From very young Maria McCloy has been an accessories addict, and we are truly grateful for her obsessions. She makes beautiful, local infused pieces.
Whilst Marian was running Black Rage Productions she went home to Maseru for the weekend, where she met Ntate David Makoae near the Maseru market , she remembers his craft, the wire earring he was making was better quality, and beautiful. She asked him “make me some but mine must be muccch bigger?” He replied “Your ear will fall off Ausi”. When she returned to Johannesburg, Mokgadi Itsweng , current True Love food editor, saw her earrings at her then restaurant, ordered a few pairs and took them to her friend Nkhensani, who owned Stoned Cherrie. It wasn’t long before Maria started stocking Stoned Cherrie, Sun Goddess and Mantsoe .Soon the earrings were in magazine shoots on the lobes of Lira and today you will have seen Zaki Ibrahim and Simphiwe Dana rocking them…
In January 2011 she was part of the opening of Market On Main in the super fashionable down town re imagined Maboneng Precinct (www.marketonmain.co.za) which is where you can find her now every Sunday from 10am to 3pm . That year she had to create a media gift for a Congolese movie called Viva Riva and came up with a branded African print clutch and a new part of her line was born. In 2012 this evolved to mens and womens shoes covered in African print, which we love! Her work has been featured in True Love, Destiny, Cosmo, and she has been interviewed on CNN Inside Africa.
Maria is what we love all round, she is innovative in business, has a go getter attitude, and crafts a quality, uniquely South African line.
Find her At Market On Main Cnr Fox and Berea, Jhb every Sunday 10am to 3pm.
