Let's face it, when doing a post series on great local design, and products it wouldn't be complete without Dokter and Misses.
Dokter and Misses is a internationally known South African brand, they are known for their strong modernist lines, graphic patterns and a touch of quirk (which we like). Also, they are really nice people.
Established in 2007 by husband and wife team Adriaan Hugo and Katy Taplin, their standard product range include tables, lighting, storage solutions and mirrors. Additionally the design duo produce collectable design pieces and bespoke commissions. The Kassena series is one of these lines, which we especially love.
The beautiful double sided unit was on display at Southern Guild during Design Miami/ Basel 2014 is the latest work in the Kassena series that Dokter & Misses started producing in 2012. Conceived as a run of 15 pieces in total, each will be made of beech wood by Hugo with hand painted graphic decoration by Taplin. Varying in size and colour, the series was inspired by the Kassena painted mud buildings of Burkina Faso and Ghana that – in a reflection of Dokter & Misses own practice – are made by men and decorated by women. The couple make one piece from the series at a time, only moving on to the next once the previous piece has sold. - See more here
