Luckily for us in South Africa the end of our working year coincides with sunny skies and balmy evenings – the perfect backdrop for tuning out, signing off or shifting to a lower gear.

From all of us at the SABS Design Institute, we wish you happy holidays and hope that you will have a peaceful festive season with family and friends.

May the New Year bring loads of energy and renewed vigour to face up to the challenges of 2013.


Icsid hands over the Design Capital title to Cape Town

The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) handed over the title of Design - Capital 2012 year.  Read more about this here
Staying with news about the World Design Capital, Cape Town recently announced the board for the WDC 2014 Implementation Agency who has the mandate is to ensure that the requirements of the WDC 2014 Host City Agreement will be met. Find out who they are here

Cool Capital Biennale is coming

The Cool Capital Biennale 2014 will celebrate visual arts, design and architecture in South Africa’s capital city Pretoria /Tshwane. It is envisaged that this project will prove that small, citizen-led interventions can make a massive difference and bring about positive change in a community. Buying Local Pledge to boost locally manufactured goods and services

Industry bodies, government and labour signed a Buying Local Pledge at the end of November to promote the procurement of locally manufactured goods and services. It is hoped that this move will give a must needed boost to locally produced products and services. The signing coincided with the launch of Proudly SA’s Local Procurement Accord Database on its website. Furniture design news from the Western Cape Furniture Initiative (WCFI)

The closing date for the WCFI’s Furniture design competition has been extended to 13 January 2013. Information on the competition is available here.  Information on the Bursary Assistance scheme of the Furniture Manufacturing Industry is available here. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2013.

IDEA 2013: Recognising design excellence

The annual International Design Excellence Awards® (IDEA) has been organised by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) for the past 33 years. IDEA recognises design excellence in products, sustainability, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts. The 2013 competition is now open for entries and offers an opportunity for designers, students and companies worldwide to showcase their designs. To enter or to see the 2012 winners, click here

Red Dot 2013: Showcasing international product design and design concepts

Entries are now open for the 2013 Red Dot Design Award, the world’s oldest design award scheme that has been organised by the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen, Germany since 1955. The scheme offers prize categories for product design, design agencies and design concepts. Winning products are presented in the Red Dot Design Museum at the historical Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex in Essen. To enter or to find out more, click here
