Design Institute to shine at Innovation Summit

The 7th annual South African Innovation Summit takes place at the Cape Town Stadium from 16 to 18 September. As was the case last year, the Design Institute will play a leading role at the Summit as part of its commitment to support ideas that will make a change in South Africa and further afield into Africa.

The Summit, South Africa’s foremost innovation event, forms part of World Design Capital Cape Town 2014 and aims to live up to its theme, ‘Local Innovation, Global Conversation’. The event also endeavours to showcase South Africa’s wealth of creativity, originality and ingenuity when it comes to developing solutions to unique challenges.

Prizes to be won at the Pitching Den

The annual Pitching Den competition at the Innovation Summit will give all entrepreneurs, researchers, inventors, incubators and innovators across all industries a chance to pitch their creating ideas to a panel of judges to stand a chance to win a share of R25 000.

The Design Institute, as one of the SA Innovation Summit partners, will sponsor three Pitching Den participants to go through the Counterpoint Programme. The selection of the participants will be based on the market potential of their idea.

During the Counterpoint Programme the Institute surrounds each entrepreneur with a design team that helps to create the product, brand and business model simultaneously. The design team works alongside the entrepreneur during work days at the Institute and also at a distance when the entrepreneur is off site.

The Institute also brings in industry experts to help each design team with knowledge related to the specific idea and business. These experts are drawn from its industry partner companies, many of which also send their employees through Institute programmes.

By sponsoring prizes in the Pitching Den, the Design Institute fulfils its mandate as South Africa’s foremost design promotion body. The Institute believes that new businesses start with the right combination of person, idea and business model. It therefore uses a holistic approach to developing all three along a structured design process.
