Design Institute moving SMME's forward by design
“Good design is good business” Thomas Watson Jr., former president of IBM, said. A few years later AG Lafley, former CEO of Procter & Gamble, added to the statement with “Good design is serious business”.

That is exactly what the SABS Design Institute kept in mind during the process of finding its role in addressing the design challenges faced by SMME's in contemporary South Africa.  A pilot project to support SMME’s through design, the SMME Design Intervention Project, was initiated during the 2012/2013 financial year. After months of exploring new partnerships and processes, the road has been mapped to facilitate design interventions to truly advance SMME development and we can positively vouch: “Good design seriously elevates the level of competitiveness of SMME’s entering the market space”. Read more

You are invited to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday and his life's contribution to humanity by creating a poster or series of posters. The project aims to collect 95 exceptional posters from around the world and collate them into an online publication and travelling exhibition. Collaborative consumption with the Community Cooker
The Community Cooker, designed by Kenyans Jim Archer, Mumo Musuvo and Amos Wachira, has been awarded ICSID’s World Design Impact Prize in 2012.
It is currently in use in one of Africa’s largest slums Kibera, in Nairobi, where electricity is not readily available. It works in three steps: collecting rubbish, sorting the collected rubbish, and incineration. Read more
