Designer: Peter Mabeo

Since the end of this month is the GUILD design Fair in Cape Town of which we are proud Industry associates, we thought it good to feature some of the products and designers that will be there or exhibit there on our blog!

Peter Mabeo is the founder of Mabeo in Botswana Africa. In 2006, following 10 years of making bespoke furniture for commercial customers in Botswana, he took initial steps towards creating a brand that would be the basis of realizing his aspirations of making interesting products in a meaningful way with a focus on quality, craftsmanship, design, sustainability, culture and people

He began collaborating with local artisans in Botswana to create a design collection that reflects African craft expertise in woodworking, textiles, and basketry. From the outset, the studio has collaborated with revered contemporary designers including Patricia Urquiola, Patty Johnson, Claesson Koivisto Rune, Luca Nichetto, and Scholten and Baijings, on sustainable, humanely produced pieces and projects that celebrate African heritage and support local craft economies.

The aim of Mabeo is to make the work of African artisans available to the world in a considered way, through thoughtful collaboration with the best international designers. Good design, high quality, craftsmanship, use of sustainable materials, culture, people and community development are the main tenets of the brand.

Mabeo participates in a variety of international design fairs including Milan Design Week, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York, and the London Design Festival. His studio was awarded ICFF Editors Awards in 2006, 2008 and 2010.

For GUILD, Mabeo Furniture have collaborated with award winning design artist Porky Hefer on further exploration of his human-scale nest series which have been celebrated at the most important design fairs around the world.
