Design Institute: Education partner of OPEN DESIGN, Cape Town

The Design Institute has thrown in its weight with OPEN DESIGN, Cape Town, taking place from 13 to 23 August at Cape Town City Hall and at various venues across the city. The organisers consider this design extravaganza a highlight of the city’s winter season.

With 86 events, involving nine countries, 14 high schools (including the School of the Deaf),  and 12 official institutions, Gavin Mageni, group manager, SABS Design Institute says about the Institute’s involvement as education partner:   “Opening the minds of young people through innovative design education can lead to development and economic growth. Without advancing it we might find ourselves confined to the barracks of mediocrity and poverty."

The educational wing at the City Hall event provides young people with an insight into design as an educational tool as well as a career path.  At the One-Stop Design Shop expo, learners, parents and educators will be able to meet tertiary institutions from across South Africa offering design-related courses. They will also be introduced to design as a career through a series of dynamic audio-visual presentations highlighting design, design thinking, animation, advertising and other disciplines. The Playroom is an interactive space that allows learners to explore innovative projects and cutting-edge technology. Every aspect of the SABS Education Wing is geared towards inspiring the next generation of designers, design thinkers, entrepreneurs and innovators.

As a partner of the 2014 event, the Design Institute expresses its belief that the youth of the country should draw on the power of design to unlock economic value.
