Art in the Forest is a thriving ceramic centre, set in the beautiful and inspiring surrounds of Cecilia Forest in Cape Town. their Foundation, the Light from Africa Foundation, provides free clay classes to children from disadvantaged communities and schools, giving access to art and creative expression. That is what first caught our eye here at the DI, if we are to move forward as a nation design is the key, but also the transfer of the design and craft skills.
As the commercial profits from Art in the Forest are reinvested into the businesses, 100% of these profits as well as 100% of all donations made to the Foundation go directly towards their mentorship, Clay Play Programmes and our Claymobile project. Their Studio is a ceramic hub offering space for established artists, adult ceramic classes with Anthony Shapiro and regular workshops by local and international artists. Their Gallery showcases the best of Southern Africa’s contemporary ceramics and we host regular exhibitions.
Their beautiful Forestware collection is produced onsite, under Anthony Shapiro’s watchful eye, by the young artists he is training and mentoring. The brand is already making headway locally and internationally. We especially like the Nguni jugs and the Ceramic Ottomans.
